Abhidhammapiṭaka · Vibhaṅga · Vol. 35 · Section 1038

[1038] And how is there 'I shall be'? Not setting apart any phenomenon (dhamma) — form (rūpa), feeling (vedanā), perception (saññā), volitional formations (saṅkhārā), or consciousness (viññāṇa) — one obtains the desire (chanda) 'I shall be'; one obtains the conceit (māna) 'I shall be'; one obtains the view (diṭṭhi) 'I shall be'. When that exists, there come to be these proliferations (papañcitāni): 'I shall be thus,' or 'I shall be just so,' or 'I shall be otherwise.'
