[108] Eleven sense bases (āyatana) are not floods (ogha) … are not bonds (yoga) … are not hindrances (nīvaraṇa); the dhamma base (dhammāyatana) sometimes is a hindrance, sometimes is not a hindrance. Ten sense bases are subject to hindrances (nīvaraṇiya); two sense bases sometimes are subject to hindrances, sometimes are not subject to hindrances. Ten sense bases are dissociated from hindrances (nīvaraṇa-vippayutta); two sense bases sometimes are associated with hindrances (nīvaraṇa-sampayutta), sometimes are dissociated from hindrances. Ten sense bases should not be said to be "both hindrances and subject to hindrances"; they are subject to hindrances but not hindrances. The mind base (manāyatana) should not be said to be "both a hindrance and subject to hindrances"; it sometimes is subject to hindrances but not a hindrance, sometimes should not be said to be "subject to hindrances but not a hindrance." The dhamma base sometimes is both a hindrance and subject to hindrances, sometimes is subject to hindrances but not a hindrance, sometimes should not be said to be either "both a hindrance and subject to hindrances" or "subject to hindrances but not a hindrance." Ten sense bases should not be said to be either "both hindrances and associated with hindrances" or "associated with hindrances but not hindrances." The mind base should not be said to be "both a hindrance and associated with hindrances"; it sometimes is associated with hindrances but not a hindrance, sometimes should not be said to be "associated with hindrances but not a hindrance." The dhamma base sometimes is both a hindrance and associated with hindrances, sometimes is associated with hindrances but not a hindrance, sometimes should not be said to be either "both a hindrance and associated with hindrances" or "associated with hindrances but not a hindrance." Ten sense bases are dissociated from hindrances but subject to hindrances; two sense bases sometimes are dissociated from hindrances but subject to hindrances, sometimes are dissociated from hindrances and not subject to hindrances, sometimes should not be said to be either "dissociated from hindrances but subject to hindrances" or "dissociated from hindrances and not subject to hindrances."
