[91] The four aggregates (khandha) are not floods (ogha) … are not bonds (yoga) … are not hindrances (nīvaraṇa); the aggregate of volitional formations (saṅkhārakkhandha) sometimes is a hindrance, sometimes is not a hindrance. The form aggregate (rūpakkhandha) is favorable to hindrances (nīvaraṇiya); the four aggregates sometimes are favorable to hindrances, sometimes are not favorable to hindrances (anīvaraṇiya). The form aggregate is dissociated from hindrances (nīvaraṇavippayutta); the four aggregates sometimes are associated with hindrances (nīvaraṇasampayutta), sometimes are dissociated from hindrances. The form aggregate should not be described as 'both a hindrance and favorable to hindrances'; it is favorable to hindrances but not a hindrance. Three aggregates should not be described as 'both hindrances and favorable to hindrances'; sometimes they are favorable to hindrances but not hindrances, sometimes they should not be described as 'favorable to hindrances but not hindrances.'
