[249] They are not floods (ogha) … they are not bonds (yoga) … they are not hindrances (nīvaraṇa). Ten faculties (indriya) are favorable to hindrances (nīvaraṇiya); three faculties are not favorable to hindrances (anīvaraṇiya); nine faculties are sometimes favorable to hindrances, sometimes not favorable to hindrances. Fifteen faculties are dissociated from hindrances (nīvaraṇa-vippayutta); the grief faculty (domanassindriya) is associated with hindrances (nīvaraṇa-sampayutta); six faculties are sometimes associated with hindrances, sometimes dissociated from hindrances. Ten faculties should not be said to be "both hindrances and favorable to hindrances"; they are favorable to hindrances but not hindrances. Three faculties should not be said to be "both hindrances and favorable to hindrances," nor "favorable to hindrances but not hindrances." Nine faculties should not be said to be "both hindrances and favorable to hindrances"; they are sometimes "favorable to hindrances but not hindrances," and sometimes should not be said to be "favorable to hindrances but not hindrances." Fifteen faculties should not be said to be "both hindrances and associated with hindrances," nor "associated with hindrances but not hindrances." The grief faculty should not be said to be "both a hindrance and associated with hindrances," nor "associated with hindrances but not a hindrance."
