[248] [The twenty-two faculties (indriya)] are not ties (gantha). Ten faculties are subject to ties (ganthaniya); three faculties are not subject to ties (aganthaniya); nine faculties are sometimes subject to ties, sometimes not subject to ties. Fifteen faculties are dissociated from ties (ganthavippayutta); the grief faculty (domanassindriya) is associated with ties (ganthasampayutta); six faculties are sometimes associated with ties, sometimes dissociated from ties. Ten faculties should not be said to be "both ties and subject to ties"; they are subject to ties but not ties. Three faculties should not be said to be either "both ties and subject to ties" or "subject to ties but not ties." Nine faculties should not be said to be "both ties and subject to ties"; they are sometimes subject to ties but not ties, and sometimes should not be said to be "subject to ties but not ties." Fifteen faculties should not be said to be either "both ties and associated with ties" or "associated with ties but not ties." The grief faculty should not be said to be "both a tie and associated with ties"; it is associated with ties but not a tie.
