[106] Eleven sense bases (āyatana) are not fetters (saṃyojana); the dhamma sense base (dhammāyatana) sometimes is a fetter, sometimes is not a fetter. Ten sense bases are subject to fetters (saṃyojaniya); two sense bases sometimes are subject to fetters, sometimes are not subject to fetters. Ten sense bases are dissociated from fetters (saṃyojana-vippayutta); two sense bases sometimes are associated with fetters (saṃyojana-sampayutta), sometimes are dissociated from fetters. Ten sense bases cannot be described as "both fetters and subject to fetters"; they are subject to fetters but not fetters. The mind sense base (manāyatana) cannot be described as "both a fetter and subject to fetters"; sometimes it is subject to fetters but not a fetter, sometimes it cannot be described as "subject to fetters but not a fetter." The dhamma sense base sometimes is both a fetter and subject to fetters, sometimes is subject to fetters but not a fetter, sometimes cannot be described either as "both a fetter and subject to fetters" or as "subject to fetters but not a fetter." Ten sense bases cannot be described either as "both fetters and associated with fetters" or as "associated with fetters but not fetters."
