[107] Eleven sense bases (āyatana) are not ties (gantha); the dhamma base (dhammāyatana) is sometimes a tie, sometimes not a tie. Ten sense bases are subject to ties (ganthaniya); two sense bases are sometimes subject to ties, sometimes not subject to ties. Ten sense bases are dissociated from ties (ganthavippayutta); two sense bases are sometimes associated with ties (ganthasampayutta), sometimes dissociated from ties. Ten sense bases are not to be said to be "both ties and subject to ties"; they are subject to ties but not ties. The mind base (manāyatana) is not to be said to be "both a tie and subject to ties"; sometimes it is subject to ties but not a tie; sometimes it is not to be said to be "subject to ties but not a tie." The dhamma base is sometimes both a tie and subject to ties; sometimes subject to ties but not a tie; sometimes not to be said to be either "both a tie and subject to ties" or "subject to ties but not a tie." Ten sense bases are not to be said to be either "both ties and associated with ties" or "associated with ties but not ties." The mind base is not to be said to be "both a tie and associated with ties"; sometimes it is associated with ties but not a tie; sometimes it is not to be said to be "associated with ties but not a tie." The dhamma base is sometimes both a tie and associated with ties; sometimes associated with ties but not a tie; sometimes not to be said to be either "both a tie and associated with ties" or "associated with ties but not a tie." Ten sense bases are dissociated from ties yet subject to ties; two sense bases are sometimes dissociated from ties yet subject to ties, sometimes dissociated from ties and not subject to ties, and sometimes not to be said to be either "dissociated from ties yet subject to ties" or "dissociated from ties and not subject to ties."
