[137] Seventeen elements (dhātu) are not ties (gantha); the dhamma-element (dhammadhātu) sometimes is a tie, sometimes is not a tie. Sixteen elements are subject to ties (ganthaniya); two elements sometimes are subject to ties, sometimes are not subject to ties. Sixteen elements are dissociated from ties (gantha-vippayutta); two elements sometimes are associated with ties (gantha-sampayutta), sometimes are dissociated from ties. Sixteen elements are not to be described as "both ties and subject to ties"; they are subject to ties but not ties. The mind-consciousness element (manoviññāṇadhātu) is not to be described as "both a tie and subject to ties"; sometimes it is subject to ties but not a tie, sometimes it is not to be described as "subject to ties but not a tie". The dhamma-element sometimes is both a tie and subject to ties, sometimes is subject to ties but not a tie, sometimes is not to be described either as "both a tie and subject to ties" or as "subject to ties but not a tie". Sixteen elements are not to be described either as "both ties and associated with ties" or as "associated with ties but not ties".
