[105] Eleven sense bases (āyatana) are not taints (āsava); the phenomena base (dhammāyatana) may be a taint; may not be a taint. Ten sense bases are subject to taints (sāsava); two sense bases may be subject to taints; may be not subject to taints (anāsava). Ten sense bases are dissociated from taints (āsava-vippayutta); two sense bases may be associated with taints (āsava-sampayutta); may be dissociated from taints. Ten sense bases cannot be described as "both taints and subject to taints"; they are subject to taints but not taints. The mind base (manāyatana) cannot be described as "both a taint and subject to taints"; it may be subject to taints but not a taint; it may not be describable as "subject to taints but not a taint." The phenomena base may be both a taint and subject to taints; may be subject to taints but not a taint; may not be describable either as "both a taint and subject to taints" or as "subject to taints but not a taint."
