[88] Four aggregates (khandha) are not taints (āsava); the aggregate of volitional formations (saṅkhārakkhandha) may be a taint, may be not a taint. The aggregate of form (rūpakkhandha) is subject to taints (sāsava); four aggregates may be subject to taints, may be not subject to taints (anāsava). The aggregate of form is dissociated from taints (āsavavippayutta); four aggregates may be associated with taints (āsavasampayutta), may be dissociated from taints. The aggregate of form should not be said to be "both a taint and subject to taints"; it is subject to taints but not a taint. Three aggregates should not be said to be "both taints and subject to taints"; they may be subject to taints but not taints; they may be such that they should not be said to be "subject to taints but not taints." The aggregate of form should not be said to be either "both a taint and associated with taints" or "associated with taints but not a taint."
