[112] Eleven sense bases (āyatana) are not defilements (kilesa); the phenomena sense base (dhammāyatana) may be a defilement, may be not a defilement. Ten sense bases are subject to defilement (saṅkilesika); two sense bases may be subject to defilement, may be not subject to defilement (asaṅkilesika). Ten sense bases are undefiled (asaṅkiliṭṭha); two sense bases may be defiled (saṅkiliṭṭha), may be undefiled. Ten sense bases are dissociated from defilements (kilesavippayutta); two sense bases may be associated with defilements (kilesasampayutta), may be dissociated from defilements. Ten sense bases should not be said to be "both defilements and subject to defilement"; they are subject to defilement but not defilements. The mind sense base (manāyatana) should not be said to be "both a defilement and subject to defilement"; it may be subject to defilement but not a defilement, may be such that it should not be said to be "subject to defilement but not a defilement." The phenomena sense base may be both a defilement and subject to defilement, may be subject to defilement but not a defilement, may be such that it should not be said to be either "both a defilement and subject to defilement" or "subject to defilement but not a defilement." Ten sense bases should not be said to be either "both defilements and defiled" or "defiled but not defilements." The mind sense base should not be said to be "both a defilement and defiled"; it may be defiled but not a defilement, may be such that it should not be said to be "defiled but not a defilement." The phenomena sense base may be both a defilement and defiled, may be defiled but not a defilement, may be such that it should not be said to be either "both a defilement and defiled" or "defiled but not a defilement."
