[149] Therein, what is sorrow (soka)?
In one afflicted by the loss (byasana) of relatives, or in one afflicted by the loss of wealth, or in one afflicted by loss through illness, or in one afflicted by the loss of virtue (sīla), or in one afflicted by the loss of view (diṭṭhi); in one possessed of one or another loss, in one afflicted by one or another painful state (dukkhadhamma): the sorrow, the sorrowing, the state of being sorrowful, the inner sorrow, the deep inner sorrow, the burning of the mind, grief (domanassa), the dart of sorrow (sokasalla) — this is called sorrow.
