Saṁmappadhānavibhaṅgasuttantabhājanīya

[482] "He generates zeal (chanda)" … "He makes an effort" … "He arouses energy (viriya)" … "He exerts the mind (citta)" … "He endeavors": Therein, what is endeavor (padhāna)? That which is the mental arousing of energy (viriyārambha) … right effort (sammāvāyāma) — this is called endeavor. With this endeavor he is endowed … possessed of it. Therefore it is said, "he endeavors." The Suttanta Analysis (Suttantabhājanīya).
