[1763] S.: Is concentration (samādhi) that is without thought (vitakka), having examination (vicāra) only, an interval between jhānas (jhānantarikā)?
P.: Yes.
S.: Were not three concentrations spoken of by the Blessed One: concentration with thought and with examination; concentration without thought, having examination only; and concentration without thought and without examination?
P.: Yes.
S.: If three concentrations were spoken of by the Blessed One — concentration with thought and with examination; concentration without thought, having examination only; and concentration without thought and without examination — then indeed, good sir, it should not be said: "Concentration without thought, having examination only, is an interval between jhānas."
