[281] Sakavādin: The person who is practicing for the realization (sacchikiriyā) of the fruit of non-returning (anāgāmiphala) — what does he abandon by the seeing (dassana) of suffering (dukkha)?
Paravādin: He abandons sensual lust (kāmarāga) of the subtle degree (aṇusahagata); he abandons ill will (byāpāda) of the subtle degree and one part of the defilements (kilesa) conjoined therewith (tadekaṭṭha).
Sakavādin: Is he in one part a non-returner (anāgāmī) and in one part not a non-returner? Has he in one part reached the fruit of non-returning — gained it, attained it, realized it — and does he dwell having entered upon it, dwell having touched it with the body, while in one part he does not dwell having touched it with the body? Is he in one part an attainer of final Nibbāna in the interval (antarāparinibbāyī), an attainer of final Nibbāna upon landing (upahaccaparinibbāyī), an attainer of final Nibbāna without exertion (asaṅkhāraparinibbāyī), an attainer of final Nibbāna with exertion (sasaṅkhāraparinibbāyī), one going upstream, bound for Akaniṭṭha (uddhaṃsoto akaniṭṭhagāmī), while in one part he is not one going upstream, bound for Akaniṭṭha?
Paravādin: It should not be said thus. …
