Abhidhammapiṭaka · Kathāvatthu · Vol. 37 · Section 654

[654] The person practicing for the realization of the fruit of non-returning (anāgāmiphala) — what does he abandon by the seeing of suffering (dukkha)? He abandons a fourth part of subtle (aṇusahagata) sensual lust (kāmarāga), of subtle ill will (byāpāda), and of the defilements (kilesa) standing together with them (tadekaṭṭha). By a fourth part, then, is he a non-returner (anāgāmī), and by a fourth part not a non-returner? By a fourth part has he reached, obtained, attained, and realized the fruit of non-returning, does he dwell having entered upon it, dwell having touched it with the body — and by a fourth part does he dwell not having touched it with the body? By a fourth part is he one who attains final Nibbāna in the interval (antarāparinibbāyī) … one who attains final Nibbāna upon landing (upahaccaparinibbāyī) … one who attains final Nibbāna without exertion (asaṅkhāraparinibbāyī) … one who attains final Nibbāna with exertion (sasaṅkhāraparinibbāyī) … one bound upstream, bound for the Akaniṭṭha realm (uddhaṃsoto akaniṭṭhagāmī) — and by a fourth part not one bound upstream, not bound for the Akaniṭṭha realm? It should not be said thus. … By the seeing of the origin (samudaya) … by the seeing of cessation (nirodha) … by the seeing of the path (magga) — what does he abandon? He abandons a fourth part of subtle sensual lust, of subtle ill will, and of the defilements standing together with them. By a fourth part, then, is he a non-returner, and by a fourth part not a non-returner? By a fourth part has he reached, obtained, attained, and realized the fruit of non-returning, does he dwell having entered upon it, dwell having touched it with the body — and by a fourth part does he dwell not having touched it with the body? By a fourth part is he one who attains final Nibbāna in the interval … one who attains final Nibbāna upon landing … one who attains final Nibbāna without exertion … one who attains final Nibbāna with exertion, one bound upstream, bound for the Akaniṭṭha realm — and by a fourth part not one bound upstream, not bound for the Akaniṭṭha realm? It should not be said thus. …
