[31] Sakavādin: Is consciousness (viññāṇa) found in the real and ultimate sense (sacchikaṭṭha-paramaṭṭhena), and is form (rūpa) found … and is feeling (vedanā) found … and is perception (saññā) found … and are volitional formations (saṅkhārā) found in the real and ultimate sense — is consciousness one thing and volitional formations another?
Paravādin: Yes.
Sakavādin: Is the person (puggala) found in the real and ultimate sense, and is consciousness found in the real and ultimate sense?
Paravādin: Yes.
Sakavādin: Is consciousness one thing and the person another?
Paravādin: It should not be said thus.
Sakavādin: Acknowledge the refutation (niggaha)! If consciousness is found in the real and ultimate sense, and volitional formations are found in the real and ultimate sense, consciousness being one thing and volitional formations another; and if the person is found in the real and ultimate sense, and consciousness is found in the real and ultimate sense — then indeed, sir, it should be said: "Consciousness is one thing, the person another." What you say there — that it should indeed be said: "Consciousness is found in the real and ultimate sense, and volitional formations are found in the real and ultimate sense, consciousness being one thing and volitional formations another; the person is found in the real and ultimate sense, and consciousness is found in the real and ultimate sense," and yet it should not be said: "Consciousness is one thing, the person another" — that is wrong. But if it should not be said: "Consciousness is one thing, the person another," then indeed, sir, it should not be said: "Consciousness is found in the real and ultimate sense, and volitional formations are found in the real and ultimate sense, consciousness being one thing and volitional formations another; the person is found in the real and ultimate sense, and consciousness is found in the real and ultimate sense." What you say there — that it should indeed be said: "Consciousness is found in the real and ultimate sense, and volitional formations are found in the real and ultimate sense, consciousness being one thing and volitional formations another; the person is found in the real and ultimate sense, and consciousness is found in the real and ultimate sense," and yet it should not be said: "Consciousness is one thing, the person another" — that is wrong. …
