Thought-conception (vitakka) and discursive thought (vicāra) have been declared by the Blessed One to be verbal formations (vacīsaṅkhāra); and for one who has attained the first jhāna there are thought-conception and discursive thought — is there, then, utterance of speech (vacībheda) for him? P. Yes. S. For one who has attained the first jhāna on the earth kasiṇa (paṭhavīkasiṇa) there are thought-conception and discursive thought — is there, then, utterance of speech for him? P. It should not be said thus. …
