[612] S. Applied thought (vitakka) and sustained thought (vicāra) have been declared by the Blessed One to be verbal formations (vacīsaṅkhāra), and for one who has attained the first jhāna there are applied thought and sustained thought. Is there, then, utterance of speech (vacībheda) for him?
P. Yes.
S. For one who has attained the first jhāna on the water kasiṇa (āpokasiṇa) … on the fire kasiṇa (tejokasiṇa), on the air kasiṇa (vāyokasiṇa), on the blue kasiṇa (nīlakasiṇa), on the yellow kasiṇa (pītakasiṇa), on the red kasiṇa (lohitakasiṇa) … on the white kasiṇa (odātakasiṇa), there are applied thought and sustained thought. Is there, then, utterance of speech for him?
P. It should not be said thus. …
