[620] S. Sound has been declared by the Blessed One to be a thorn (kaṇṭaka) to the first jhāna — is there, then, utterance of speech (vacībheda) for one who has attained (samāpanna)?
P. Yes.
S. Thought and examination (vitakka-vicārā) have been declared by the Blessed One to be a thorn to the second jhāna … rapture (pīti) has been declared by the Blessed One to be a thorn to the third jhāna; in-breathing and out-breathing (assāsa-passāsā) have been declared by the Blessed One to be a thorn to the fourth jhāna; perception of form (rūpasaññā) has been declared by the Blessed One to be a thorn to one who has attained the sphere of infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana); perception of the sphere of infinity of space has been declared by the Blessed One to be a thorn to one who has attained the sphere of infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana); perception of the sphere of infinity of consciousness has been declared by the Blessed One to be a thorn to one who has attained the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana); perception of the sphere of nothingness has been declared by the Blessed One to be a thorn to one who has attained the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana) … perception (saññā) and feeling (vedanā) have been declared by the Blessed One to be a thorn to one who has attained the cessation of perception and feeling (saññāvedayitanirodha) — does that one, then, have perception and feeling?
