[652] [Sakavādin:] The person practising for the realization of the fruition of stream-entry (sotāpattiphala) — what does he abandon by the seeing of suffering (dukkha)?
[Paravādin:] He abandons a fourth part of personality-view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi), of doubt (vicikicchā), of adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa), and of the defilements (kilesa) standing together with them (tadekaṭṭha).
[Sakavādin:] As to a fourth part is he then a stream-enterer (sotāpanna), and as to a fourth part not a stream-enterer? As to a fourth part has he reached, obtained, attained, realized the fruition of stream-entry, does he dwell having entered upon it, dwell having touched it with the body, and as to a fourth part does he dwell not having touched it with the body? As to a fourth part is he a seven-times-at-most attainer (sattakkhattuparama), a clan-to-clan attainer (kolaṃkola), a one-seed attainer (ekabījī), possessed of unwavering confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha, in the Dhamma … in the Saṅgha … possessed of the virtues dear to the noble ones (ariyakanta-sīla), and as to a fourth part is he not possessed of the virtues dear to the noble ones?
[Paravādin:] It should not be said thus. …
[Sakavādin:] By the seeing of the origin (samudaya) … by the seeing of cessation (nirodha) … by the seeing of the path (magga) — what does he abandon?
[Paravādin:] He abandons a fourth part of personality-view, of doubt, of adherence to rules and rituals, and of the defilements standing together with them.
[Sakavādin:] As to a fourth part is he then a stream-enterer, and as to a fourth part not a stream-enterer? As to a fourth part has he reached, obtained, attained, realized the fruition of stream-entry, does he dwell having entered upon it, dwell having touched it with the body, and as to a fourth part does he dwell not having touched it with the body?
