[1453] One who does not fully understand (na parijānāti) the latent tendency of sensual lust (kāmarāgānusaya) — does he not fully understand the latent tendency of repulsion (paṭighānusaya)? Yes (āmantā). Or else: one who does not fully understand the latent tendency of repulsion — does he not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust? Yes. One who does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust — does he not fully understand the latent tendency of conceit (mānānusaya)? The one endowed with the highest path (aggamaggasamaṅgī) does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust, but it is not the case that he does not fully understand the latent tendency of conceit. Apart from the two persons endowed with the paths, the remaining persons do not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust and do not fully understand the latent tendency of conceit. Or else: one who does not fully understand the latent tendency of conceit — does he not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust? The one endowed with the path of non-returning (anāgāmimaggasamaṅgī) does not fully understand the latent tendency of conceit, but it is not the case that he does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust. Apart from the two persons endowed with the paths, the remaining persons do not fully understand the latent tendency of conceit and do not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust. One who does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust — does he not fully understand the latent tendency of views (diṭṭhānusaya) … the latent tendency of doubt (vicikicchānusaya)? The eighth person (aṭṭhamaka) does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust, but it is not the case that he does not fully understand the latent tendency of doubt. Apart from the one endowed with the path of non-returning and the eighth person, the remaining persons do not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust and do not fully understand the latent tendency of doubt. Or else: one who does not fully understand the latent tendency of doubt — does he not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust? The one endowed with the path of non-returning does not fully understand the latent tendency of doubt, but it is not the case that he does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust. Apart from the one endowed with the path of non-returning and the eighth person, the remaining persons do not fully understand the latent tendency of doubt and do not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust. One who does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust — does he not fully understand the latent tendency of lust for existence (bhavarāgānusaya) … the latent tendency of ignorance (avijjānusaya)? The one endowed with the highest path does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust, but it is not the case that he does not fully understand the latent tendency of ignorance. Apart from the two persons endowed with the paths, the remaining persons do not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust and do not fully understand the latent tendency of ignorance. Or else: one who does not fully understand the latent tendency of ignorance — does he not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust? The one endowed with the path of non-returning does not fully understand the latent tendency of ignorance, but it is not the case that he does not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust. Apart from the two persons endowed with the paths, the remaining persons do not fully understand the latent tendency of ignorance and do not fully understand the latent tendency of sensual lust.
