[1484] One who does not comprehend (parijānāti) the latent tendency of sensual lust (kāmarāgānusaya), the latent tendency of repulsion (paṭighānusaya), the latent tendency of conceit (mānānusaya), the latent tendency of views (diṭṭhānusaya), and the latent tendency of doubt (vicikicchānusaya) from a given place — does that one not comprehend the latent tendency of lust for existence (bhavarāgānusaya) from that place?
Yes.
Or, one who does not comprehend the latent tendency of lust for existence from a given place — does that one not comprehend the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt from that place?
The eighth person (aṭṭhamaka) — in the three feelings (vedanā) in the sense-sphere element (kāmadhātu), in the form element (rūpadhātu), and in the formless element (arūpadhātu) — does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of lust for existence, the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, and the latent tendency of conceit; but it is not that he does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of views and the latent tendency of doubt. That same person — in the unincluded (apariyāpanna) — does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of lust for existence, and he does not comprehend the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt. One possessed of the path of non-returning (anāgāmimaggasamaṅgī) — in painful feeling (dukkhā vedanā) — does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of lust for existence, the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt; but it is not that he does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of repulsion. That same person — in the two feelings in the sense-sphere element — does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of lust for existence, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt; but it is not that he does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of sensual lust. That same person — in the form element, in the formless element, and in the unincluded — does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of lust for existence, and he does not comprehend the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt. One possessed of the highest path (aggamaggasamaṅgī) — in the two feelings in the sense-sphere element — does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of lust for existence, the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt; but it is not that he does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of conceit. That same person — in painful feeling and in the unincluded — does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of lust for existence, and he does not comprehend the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt. Excepting those possessed of the two paths and the eighth person, the remaining persons, everywhere (sabbattha), do not comprehend the latent tendency of lust for existence, and they do not comprehend the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt.
One who does not comprehend the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt from a given place — does that one not comprehend the latent tendency of ignorance (avijjānusaya) from that place?
One possessed of the highest path — in painful feeling — does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt; but it is not that he does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of ignorance. That same person — in the unincluded — does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt, and he does not comprehend the latent tendency of ignorance. Excepting those possessed of the two paths and the eighth person, the remaining persons, everywhere, do not comprehend the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt, and they do not comprehend the latent tendency of ignorance.
Or, one who does not comprehend the latent tendency of ignorance from a given place — does that one not comprehend the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt from that place?
The eighth person — in the three feelings in the sense-sphere element, in the form element, and in the formless element — does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of ignorance, the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, and the latent tendency of conceit; but it is not that he does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of views and the latent tendency of doubt. That same person — in the unincluded — does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of ignorance, and he does not comprehend the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt. One possessed of the path of non-returning — in painful feeling — does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of ignorance, the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt; but it is not that he does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of repulsion. That same person — in the two feelings in the sense-sphere element — does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of ignorance, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt; but it is not that he does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of sensual lust. That same person — in the form element, in the formless element, and in the unincluded — does not comprehend therefrom the latent tendency of ignorance, and he does not comprehend the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt. Excepting those possessed of the two paths and the eighth person, the remaining persons, everywhere, do not comprehend the latent tendency of ignorance, and they do not comprehend the latent tendency of sensual lust, the latent tendency of repulsion, the latent tendency of conceit, the latent tendency of views, and the latent tendency of doubt.
