[1477] One who does not comprehend (parijānāti) the latent tendency of conceit (mānānusaya) from a given basis — does he not comprehend the latent tendency of views (diṭṭhānusaya) … the latent tendency of doubt (vicikicchānusaya) from that basis?
The eighth person (aṭṭhamaka) — in the three feelings (vedanā) in the sense-sphere element (kāmadhātu), in the form element (rūpadhātu), and in the formless element (arūpadhātu) — does not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit therefrom, but it is not the case that he does not comprehend the latent tendency of doubt therefrom. That same person — in the unincluded (apariyāpanna) — does not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit therefrom and does not comprehend the latent tendency of doubt therefrom. Except for the one endowed with the highest path (aggamaggasamaṅgī) and the eighth person, the remaining persons everywhere do not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit and do not comprehend the latent tendency of doubt.
Or rather, one who does not comprehend the latent tendency of doubt from a given basis — does he not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit from that basis?
The one endowed with the highest path — in the two feelings in the sense-sphere element, in the form element, and in the formless element — does not comprehend the latent tendency of doubt therefrom, but it is not the case that he does not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit therefrom. That same person — in painful feeling and in the unincluded — does not comprehend the latent tendency of doubt therefrom and does not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit therefrom. Except for the one endowed with the highest path and the eighth person, the remaining persons everywhere do not comprehend the latent tendency of doubt and do not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit.
One who does not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit from a given basis — does he not comprehend the latent tendency of lust for existence (bhavarāgānusaya) from that basis?
Yes.
Or rather, one who does not comprehend the latent tendency of lust for existence from a given basis — does he not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit from that basis?
The one endowed with the highest path — in the two feelings in the sense-sphere element — does not comprehend the latent tendency of lust for existence therefrom, but it is not the case that he does not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit therefrom. That same person — in painful feeling and in the unincluded — does not comprehend the latent tendency of lust for existence therefrom and does not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit therefrom. Except for the one endowed with the highest path, the remaining persons everywhere do not comprehend the latent tendency of lust for existence and do not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit.
One who does not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit from a given basis — does he not comprehend the latent tendency of ignorance (avijjānusaya) from that basis?
The one endowed with the highest path — in painful feeling — does not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit therefrom, but it is not the case that he does not comprehend the latent tendency of ignorance therefrom. That same person — in the unincluded — does not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit therefrom and does not comprehend the latent tendency of ignorance therefrom. Except for the one endowed with the highest path, the remaining persons everywhere do not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit and do not comprehend the latent tendency of ignorance.
Or rather, one who does not comprehend the latent tendency of ignorance from a given basis — does he not comprehend the latent tendency of conceit from that basis?
Yes.
