[198] Bhikkhus, here incoming (āgantuka) bhikkhus see the manner of residents, the characteristic of residents, the sign of residents, the indication of residents belonging to resident (āvāsika) bhikkhus — beds and benches well arranged, mattresses and pillows set out, drinking water and water for use well provided, the surrounding grounds well swept — and having seen this, they become doubtful: "Are there resident bhikkhus, or are there not?" Being doubtful, they do not search; not having searched, they perform the Uposatha: an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). Being doubtful, they search; having searched, they do not see any; not having seen any, they perform the Uposatha: no offense. Being doubtful, they search; having searched, they see them; having seen them, they perform the Uposatha together: no offense. Being doubtful, they search; having searched, they see them; having seen them, they perform the Uposatha separately: an offense of wrong-doing. Being doubtful, they search; having searched, they see them; having seen them, aiming at schism — "May those bhikkhus be lost! May those bhikkhus be destroyed! What use is there in them?" — they perform the Uposatha: a grave offense (thullaccaya).
