[235] Now here, bhikkhus, in a certain residence (āvāsa), on the day of the Invitation (pavāraṇā), several resident bhikkhus assemble — five or more. They know: "There are other resident bhikkhus who have not come." Being doubtful — "Is it allowable for us to make the Invitation, or is it not allowable?" — they make the Invitation. While they are making the Invitation, then other resident bhikkhus arrive, greater in number. Bhikkhus, those bhikkhus must make the Invitation again; those who have [already] made the Invitation incur an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). … Then other resident bhikkhus arrive, equal in number … fewer in number. Those who have made the Invitation have made it well; the remainder should make the Invitation; those who have [already] made the Invitation incur an offense of wrong-doing.

Those who have made the Invitation have made it well; [the newcomers] should make the Invitation in their presence; those who have [already] made the Invitation incur an offense of wrong-doing.
