[1444] Dependent on a phenomenon (dhamma) that is clung to and subject to clinging (upādinnupādāniya), there arises a phenomenon that is clung to and subject to clinging, not by faculty condition (indriya-paccaya): For non-percipient beings (asaññasattā), the material life-faculty (rūpa-jīvitindriya) arises dependent on the great primary elements (mahābhūta).
