[1699] A phenomenon that is undefiled but subject to defilement (asaṅkiliṭṭha-saṅkilesika dhamma) is a condition, by way of decisive-support condition (upanissaya-paccaya), for a phenomenon that is undefiled but subject to defilement: object decisive-support (ārammaṇūpanissaya), proximity decisive-support (anantarūpanissaya), natural decisive-support (pakatūpanissaya).
Natural decisive-support: In dependence on faith (saddhā) one gives a gift (dāna), gives rise to an attainment (samāpatti); [in dependence on] virtue (sīla) … learning (suta), generosity (cāga), wisdom (paññā), bodily pleasure (kāyika sukha), bodily pain (kāyika dukkha), climate (utu), food (bhojana) … in dependence on lodging (senāsana) one gives a gift, gives rise to an attainment. Faith … lodging is a condition, by way of decisive-support condition, for faith, for bodily pleasure. Wholesome kamma is a condition, by way of decisive-support condition, for [its] result (vipāka). The preliminary work (parikamma) for the first jhāna [is a condition] for the first jhāna; the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana) [is a condition] for the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana).
