[5] "Immediacy condition (anantara-paccaya)" means: The eye-consciousness element (cakkhuviññāṇa-dhātu) and the phenomena (dhammā) associated with it are a condition, by way of immediacy condition, for the mind element (mano-dhātu) and the phenomena associated with it. The mind element and the phenomena associated with it are a condition, by way of immediacy condition, for the mind-consciousness element (manoviññāṇa-dhātu) and the phenomena associated with it. The ear-consciousness element (sotaviññāṇa-dhātu) and the phenomena associated with it are a condition, by way of immediacy condition, for the mind element and the phenomena associated with it. The mind element and the phenomena associated with it are a condition, by way of immediacy condition, for the mind-consciousness element and the phenomena associated with it. The nose-consciousness element (ghānaviññāṇa-dhātu) and the phenomena associated with it are a condition, by way of immediacy condition, for the mind element and the phenomena associated with it. The mind element and the phenomena associated with it are a condition, by way of immediacy condition, for the mind-consciousness element and the phenomena associated with it. The tongue-consciousness element (jivhāviññāṇa-dhātu) and the phenomena associated with it are a condition, by way of immediacy condition, for the mind element and the phenomena associated with it. Preceding indeterminate phenomena are in each case a condition, by way of immediacy condition, for subsequent indeterminate phenomena. Preceding indeterminate phenomena are in each case a condition, by way of immediacy condition, for subsequent wholesome phenomena. Preceding indeterminate phenomena are in each case a condition, by way of immediacy condition, for subsequent unwholesome phenomena. Whatever phenomena arise in immediate succession to whatever phenomena — phenomena of mind (citta) and mental factors (cetasika) — those [former] phenomena are a condition, by way of immediacy condition, for those [latter] phenomena.
