[18] A root phenomenon (hetu dhamma) is a condition (paccaya) for a root phenomenon by object condition (ārammaṇa-paccaya): Taking a root as object, roots arise. A root phenomenon is a condition for a non-root phenomenon (nahetu dhamma) by object condition: Taking a root as object, non-root aggregates (khandhā) arise. A root phenomenon is a condition for a root phenomenon and a non-root phenomenon by object condition: Taking a root as object, roots and the associated (sampayuttaka) aggregates arise. A non-root phenomenon is a condition for a non-root phenomenon by object condition: Having given a gift (dāna), having undertaken virtue (sīla), having performed the uposatha observance (uposathakamma), one reviews it; one reviews what was formerly well practiced; having emerged from jhāna, one reviews the jhāna. Noble ones (ariyā), having emerged from the path (magga), review the path; the fruit (phala) …; Nibbāna …. Nibbāna is a condition for change-of-lineage (gotrabhū), for cleansing (vodāna), for the path, for the fruit, and for adverting (āvajjana), by object condition. Noble ones review the abandoned defilements (kilesa) that are non-roots; the suppressed defilements …; they know the defilements formerly indulged in. The eye … … the base (vatthu) …; they see with insight the non-root aggregates as impermanent, as suffering (dukkha), as non-self; … grief arises. One sees a form (rūpa) with the divine eye (dibbacakkhu); one hears a sound with the divine ear element (dibbā sotadhātu). With the knowledge (ñāṇa) encompassing the minds of others (cetopariya-ñāṇa), one knows the mind (citta) of one possessing a non-root mind. The functional (kiriya) base of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana-kiriya) is a condition for the functional base of the infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana-kiriya); the functional base of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana-kiriya) for the functional base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana-kiriya); the form base (rūpāyatana) for eye-consciousness (cakkhuviññāṇa); … the tangible-object base (phoṭṭhabbāyatana) for body-consciousness (kāyaviññāṇa) — by object condition. Non-root aggregates are a condition for the knowledge of supernormal power (iddhividha-ñāṇa), for the knowledge encompassing the minds of others, for the knowledge of the recollection of past lives (pubbenivāsānussati-ñāṇa), for the knowledge of faring according to kamma (yathākammūpaga-ñāṇa), for the knowledge of the future (anāgataṃsa-ñāṇa), and for adverting, by object condition. A non-root phenomenon is a condition for a root phenomenon by object condition: Having given a gift … — just the first course (paṭhamagamana) itself [applies here]; there is no "adverting"; and this, namely, "the form base for eye-consciousness … the tangible-object base for body-consciousness," is absent. A non-root phenomenon is a condition for a root phenomenon and a non-root phenomenon by object condition: Having given a gift, virtue …, the uposatha observance …, one reviews it; taking that as object, roots and the associated aggregates arise. By one who stands there [i.e., on that passage], this should be done in the same way as the second course (dutiyagamana). A root phenomenon and a non-root phenomenon are a condition for a root phenomenon by object condition: Taking a root and the associated aggregates as object, roots arise. A root phenomenon and a non-root phenomenon are a condition for a non-root phenomenon by object condition: Taking a root and the associated aggregates as object, non-root aggregates arise. A root phenomenon and a non-root phenomenon are a condition for a root phenomenon and a non-root phenomenon by object condition: Taking a root and the associated aggregates as object, roots and the associated aggregates arise.
