[584] Dependent on a hindrance phenomenon (nīvaraṇo dhammo), a hindrance phenomenon arises by root condition (hetu-paccaya): three [cases]. Dependent on a non-hindrance phenomenon (no-nīvaraṇo dhammo), a non-hindrance phenomenon arises by root condition: dependent on one non-hindrance aggregate (khandha), three aggregates and mind-originated form (cittasamuṭṭhāna-rūpa); (and so on) up to the internal great elements (ajjhattikā mahābhūtā); dependent on the base (vatthu), the non-hindrance aggregates. Dependent on a non-hindrance phenomenon, a hindrance phenomenon arises by root condition: dependent on the non-hindrance aggregates, the hindrances (nīvaraṇā); dependent on the base, the hindrances. Dependent on a non-hindrance phenomenon, a hindrance phenomenon and a non-hindrance phenomenon arise by root condition: dependent on one non-hindrance aggregate, three aggregates, the hindrances, and mind-originated form; dependent on two aggregates …; dependent on the base, the hindrances and the associated aggregates (sampayuttakā khandhā). Dependent on a hindrance phenomenon and a non-hindrance phenomenon, a hindrance phenomenon arises by root condition: dependent on the hindrance of sensual desire (kāmacchanda-nīvaraṇa) and the associated aggregates, the hindrance of dullness and drowsiness (thīna-middha-nīvaraṇa), the hindrance of restlessness (uddhacca-nīvaraṇa), and the hindrance of ignorance (avijjā-nīvaraṇa).
