[276] An internal phenomenon (ajjhattika dhamma) is a condition for an internal phenomenon by object condition (ārammaṇa-paccaya): Mind (citta) arises taking mind as object. The root (question) should be asked. Taking mind as object, external aggregates (bāhirā khandhā) arise. The root (question) should be asked. Taking mind as object, mind and the associated aggregates arise. An external phenomenon (bāhira dhamma) is a condition for an external phenomenon by object condition: A gift … virtue … having performed the uposatha observance (uposatha-kamma), one reviews it, relishes it, and delights in it; taking that as object, lust (rāga) … grief arises. One reviews what was formerly well done. Having emerged from jhāna, (one reviews) the jhāna … The noble ones, having emerged from the path (magga), review the path … the fruit … Nibbāna. Nibbāna is a condition for change-of-lineage (gotrabhū), for cleansing (vodāna), for the path, for the fruit, and for adverting (āvajjanā) by object condition. The noble ones review the abandoned defilements (kilesa) that are external; (they review) the suppressed defilements …; they know the defilements that formerly occurred. (One contemplates with insight) forms … the base (vatthu) … the external aggregates as impermanent …; grief arises. One sees a form with the divine eye (dibbacakkhu); one hears a sound with the divine ear element (dibbā sotadhātu). With the knowledge encompassing the minds of others (cetopariyañāṇa), one knows the mind of one endowed with an external mind. The base of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana) (is a condition) for the base of the infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana), the base of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana) for the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana), and the form base (rūpāyatana) is a condition for the aggregates accompanied by eye-consciousness (cakkhuviññāṇa) by object condition; the tangible base (phoṭṭhabbāyatana) … External aggregates are a condition for the knowledge of the modes of psychic power (iddhividha-ñāṇa), for the knowledge encompassing the minds of others, for the knowledge of the recollection of past lives (pubbenivāsānussati-ñāṇa), for the knowledge of (beings) faring according to their kamma (yathākammupaga-ñāṇa), for the knowledge of the future (anāgataṃsa-ñāṇa), and for adverting, by object condition.
