[21] A phenomenon with an object (sārammaṇo dhammo) is a condition for a phenomenon with an object by object condition (ārammaṇa-paccaya): a gift (dāna) … virtue (sīla) … the uposatha observance (uposathakamma) … one reviews that, relishes it, and delights in it; taking that as object … grief (domanassa) arises. Deeds well done in the past … from jhāna … The noble ones review change-of-lineage (gotrabhū) and cleansing (vodāna); the noble ones, having emerged from the path (magga), review the path, they review the fruit (phala), they review the defilements (kilesa) that have been abandoned, they review the defilements that have been suppressed, they know the defilements that formerly occurred. One [contemplates] the aggregates (khandhā) with an object as impermanent … grief arises. With the knowledge of penetrating others' minds (cetopariya-ñāṇa) one knows the mind (citta) of one who possesses a mind with an object. The sphere of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana) [is a condition] for the sphere of the infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana), the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana) for the sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana). The aggregates with an object are a condition, by object condition, for the knowledge of supernormal power (iddhividha-ñāṇa), for the knowledge of penetrating others' minds, for the knowledge of the recollection of past lives (pubbenivāsānussati-ñāṇa), for the knowledge of faring according to kamma (yathākammupaga-ñāṇa), for the knowledge of the future (anāgataṃsa-ñāṇa), and for adverting (āvajjana).
A phenomenon without an object (anārammaṇo dhammo) is a condition for a phenomenon with an object by object condition: the noble ones review Nibbāna. Nibbāna is a condition, by object condition, for change-of-lineage, for cleansing, for the path, for the fruit, and for adverting. One [contemplates] the eye (cakkhu) … the base (vatthu) as impermanent … grief arises. One sees form (rūpa) with the divine eye (dibbacakkhu); one hears sound with the divine ear element (dibbā sotadhātu). The form base (rūpāyatana) [is a condition] for eye-consciousness (cakkhuviññāṇa), the tangible base (phoṭṭhabbāyatana) for body-consciousness (kāyaviññāṇa). The aggregates without an object are a condition, by object condition, for the knowledge of supernormal power, for the knowledge of penetrating others' minds, for the knowledge of the recollection of past lives, for the knowledge of faring according to kamma, for the knowledge of the future, and for adverting.
