[494] A phenomenon (dhamma) that is a defilement (kilesa) is a condition for a phenomenon that is a defilement by way of root condition (hetu-paccaya):
Defilements that are roots (hetu) are a condition for the associated (sampayutta) defilements by way of root condition.
