[495] A phenomenon (dhamma) that is a defilement (kilesa) is a condition for a phenomenon that is a defilement by object condition (ārammaṇa-paccaya):
With defilements as object, defilements arise.
The root should be asked (mūlaṃ pucchitabbaṃ).
With defilements as object, phenomena that are not defilements arise.
The root should be asked.
With defilements as object, defilements and the associated aggregates (khandhā) arise.
A phenomenon that is not a defilement is a condition for a phenomenon that is not a defilement by object condition:
Giving (dāna) … virtue (sīla) … the uposatha observance (uposathakamma) … [deeds] well practised in the past … Having emerged from jhāna, one reviews the jhāna, relishes it, and delights in it; with that as object, lust (rāga) … wrong view (diṭṭhi), doubt (vicikicchā), restlessness (uddhacca) … grief (domanassa) arises. Noble ones (ariyā), having emerged from the path (magga), … [it] is a condition for the fruition (phala), for advertence (āvajjana), by object condition. The eye … the base (vatthu) … [one contemplates] the aggregates that are not defilements as impermanent … grief arises. One sees a form (rūpa) with the divine eye (dibbacakkhu); with the divine ear element (dibbasotadhātu) … [it] is a condition for knowledge of the future (anāgataṃsa-ñāṇa), for advertence, by object condition.
A phenomenon that is not a defilement is a condition for a phenomenon that is a defilement by object condition:
Giving … Having emerged from jhāna, one relishes and delights in the jhāna; with that as object, lust … wrong view … doubt … restlessness … When the jhāna has deteriorated, grief arises in one who is remorseful. The eye … the base … one relishes and delights in the aggregates that are not defilements; with that as object, lust … grief ….
A phenomenon that is not a defilement is a condition for a phenomenon that is a defilement and for a phenomenon that is not a defilement by object condition:
Giving … Having emerged from jhāna … The eye … the base … one relishes and delights in the aggregates that are not defilements; with that as object, defilements and the associated aggregates arise.
