[830] In dependence on (paṭicca) an external (bahiddhā) phenomenon (dhamma) that is not a root (na-hetu), an external phenomenon that is not a root arises, not by root condition (na-hetupaccayā). In dependence on an external phenomenon that is not a root, an external phenomenon that is a root (hetu) arises, not by root condition.
