[120] Then the Saṅgha of bhikkhus headed by Sāriputta and Moggallāna went to Kiṭāgiri and carried out the act of banishment (pabbājanīyakamma) against the Assaji and Punabbasuka bhikkhus, banishing them from Kiṭāgiri: "The Assaji and Punabbasuka bhikkhus are not to dwell in Kiṭāgiri."
Though the act of banishment had been carried out against them by the Saṅgha, they did not conduct themselves properly, did not become subdued (lit. did not lower their bristles), did not act so as to deserve release, and did not ask the bhikkhus for forgiveness; they abused and reviled them; they charged them with acting from partiality by desire, partiality by hatred, partiality by delusion, and partiality by fear; and some departed, and some disrobed.
Those bhikkhus who were of few desires … were annoyed, complained, and spread it about: "How can the Assaji and Punabbasuka bhikkhus, when the act of banishment has been carried out against them by the Saṅgha, not conduct themselves properly, not become subdued, not act so as to deserve release, and not ask the bhikkhus for forgiveness — abusing and reviling them, charging them with acting from partiality by desire, partiality by hatred, partiality by delusion, and partiality by fear, some departing and some disrobing?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
