[121] Then the Blessed One, in that connection, on that occasion, having had the Saṅgha of bhikkhus convened, questioned the bhikkhus: "Is it true, bhikkhus, as is reported, that the bhikkhus Assaji and Punabbasuka, against whom an act of banishment (pabbājanīyakamma) has been carried out by the Saṅgha, do not conduct themselves properly, do not become subdued, do not conduct themselves so as to deserve release, do not ask the bhikkhus for forgiveness; that they abuse and revile, that they impute bias through desire, bias through hatred, bias through delusion, and bias through fear; and that some depart and some disrobe?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "Bhikkhus, it is unfitting for those foolish men … How indeed, bhikkhus, can those foolish men, against whom an act of banishment has been carried out by the Saṅgha, not conduct themselves properly, not become subdued, not conduct themselves so as to deserve release, not ask the bhikkhus for forgiveness; abuse and revile; impute bias through desire, bias through hatred, bias through delusion, and bias through fear; and some depart and some disrobe? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence …" Having rebuked them and given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Well then, bhikkhus, let the Saṅgha revoke the act of banishment."
