[258] Then the Saṅgha carried out an act of suspension (ukkhepanīyakamma) against the bhikkhu Channa for not making amends for an offense (āpatti), prohibiting communion (asambhoga) with the Saṅgha. Having had the act of suspension for not making amends for an offense carried out against him by the Saṅgha, he went from that residence (āvāsa) to another residence. There the bhikkhus neither paid homage to him nor rose up for him, they performed neither the gesture of reverence with joined palms (añjalikamma) nor the proper acts of respect (sāmīcikamma); they did not honor him, did not respect him, did not esteem him, did not venerate him. Being unhonored, unrespected, unesteemed, and unvenerated by the bhikkhus, receiving no honor, he went from that residence too to another residence. There too the bhikkhus neither paid homage to him nor rose up for him, they performed neither the gesture of reverence with joined palms nor the proper acts of respect; they did not honor him, did not respect him, did not esteem him, did not venerate him. Being unhonored, unrespected, unesteemed, and unvenerated by the bhikkhus, receiving no honor, he went from that residence too to another residence. There too the bhikkhus neither paid homage to him nor rose up for him, they performed neither the gesture of reverence with joined palms nor the proper acts of respect; they did not honor him, did not respect him, did not esteem him, did not venerate him. Being unhonored, unrespected, unesteemed, and unvenerated by the bhikkhus, receiving no honor, he returned once again to Kosambī. He conducted himself properly, he became subdued, he behaved so as to merit release (netthāra); approaching the bhikkhus, he said this: "Friends, I, against whom the Saṅgha carried out an act of suspension for not making amends for an offense, am conducting myself properly, I have become subdued, I am behaving so as to merit release. How, then, should I proceed?" Those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Well then, bhikkhus, let the Saṅgha revoke the act of suspension carried out against the bhikkhu Channa for not making amends for an offense."
