[320] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time bhikkhus on probation (pārivāsika) were accepting from regular bhikkhus (pakatatta) the paying of homage, rising up in greeting, the salutation with joined palms, acts of proper respect, the bringing of a seat, the bringing of a bed, water for the feet, a footstool, a foot-wiper, the receiving of bowl and robe, and the rubbing of the back when bathing. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … they criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can bhikkhus on probation accept from regular bhikkhus the paying of homage, rising up in greeting, the salutation with joined palms, acts of proper respect, the bringing of a seat, the bringing of a bed, water for the feet, a footstool, a foot-wiper, the receiving of bowl and robe, and the rubbing of the back when bathing?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
