[321] Then the Blessed One, on that occasion, in that connection, having had the community of bhikkhus assembled, questioned the bhikkhus: "Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that bhikkhus on probation (pārivāsika) consent to bowing down, rising up in greeting, salutation with joined palms, acts of proper respect, the bringing of a seat, the bringing of a bed, water for the feet, a footstool, a foot-wiper, the receiving of bowl and robe, and the rubbing of the back while bathing, from regular bhikkhus (pakatatta)?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Awakened One, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How, bhikkhus, can bhikkhus on probation consent to bowing down, rising up in greeting, salutation with joined palms, acts of proper respect, the bringing of a seat, the bringing of a bed, water for the feet, a footstool, a foot-wiper, the receiving of bowl and robe, and the rubbing of the back while bathing, from regular bhikkhus? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of those who have confidence …" Having rebuked them and given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus:
"Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu on probation should not consent to bowing down, rising up in greeting, salutation with joined palms, acts of proper respect, the bringing of a seat, the bringing of a bed, water for the feet, a footstool, a foot-wiper, the receiving of bowl and robe, or the rubbing of the back while bathing, from regular bhikkhus. Whoever should consent commits an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).
"I allow, bhikkhus, among bhikkhus on probation themselves, according to seniority: bowing down, rising up in greeting, salutation with joined palms, acts of proper respect, the bringing of a seat, the bringing of a bed, water for the feet, a footstool, a foot-wiper, the receiving of bowl and robe, and the rubbing of the back while bathing.
"I allow, bhikkhus, for bhikkhus on probation, five things according to seniority: the Uposatha, the Pavāraṇā, the rains-cloth, the giving away (of food), and the meal.
"Well then, bhikkhus, I shall lay down an observance for bhikkhus on probation, in accordance with which bhikkhus on probation are to conduct themselves."
