[369] Then the Blessed One, on that account, in that connection, having had the Saṅgha of bhikkhus convened, questioned the bhikkhus: "Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that bhikkhus deserving rehabilitation (abbhānāraha) consent to bowing, rising up in respect … rubbing of the back while bathing, from regular bhikkhus (pakatatta)?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Awakened One, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How, bhikkhus, can bhikkhus deserving rehabilitation consent to bowing, rising up in respect … rubbing of the back while bathing, from regular bhikkhus? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence …" Having rebuked them and given a Dhamma talk, he addressed the bhikkhus:
"Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu deserving rehabilitation should not consent to bowing, rising up in respect … rubbing of the back while bathing, from regular bhikkhus. Whoever should consent commits an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).
"Bhikkhus, I allow, among bhikkhus deserving rehabilitation mutually, according to seniority: bowing, rising up in respect … rubbing of the back while bathing.
"Bhikkhus, I allow, for bhikkhus deserving rehabilitation, five things according to seniority: the Uposatha, the Invitation (pavāraṇā), the rains-bathing cloth (vassikasāṭikā), the dedication of offerings (oṇojana), and a meal.
"Well then, bhikkhus, I shall lay down an observance (vatta) for bhikkhus deserving rehabilitation — how bhikkhus deserving rehabilitation are to conduct themselves."
