[365] Then the Venerable Upāli approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Venerable Upāli said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, how many interruptions of the nights (ratticcheda) are there for a bhikkhu undergoing penance (mānatta)?"
"Upāli, there are four interruptions of the nights for a bhikkhu undergoing penance: dwelling together, dwelling apart, non-announcement, and carrying out [the penance] in an incomplete group. These, Upāli, are the four interruptions of the nights for a bhikkhu undergoing penance."
