[376] Summary verses (uddāna):
Bhikkhus on probation (pārivāsika) consented to receive from regular bhikkhus (pakatatta)
salutation, rising up in respect, the añjali and acts of due deference,
a seat, the bringing of a bed, water for the feet, a footstool,
a foot-wiper, the receiving of bowl and robe,
and the rubbing of the back when bathing — the well-conducted bhikkhus complained.
There is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa) for one who consents; mutually [among probationers], the five, according to seniority;
the Uposatha, the Pavāraṇā, the rains-cloth and the dedication [of food],
a meal; right conduct: they go [after] a regular bhikkhu,
and whatever [seat or lodging] is last; not in front, [nor] behind, with an ascetic;
the forest, the carrying out of almsfood; concerning incoming bhikkhus, at the Uposatha
and the Pavāraṇā, and by a messenger; and one must go to [a residence] where there are bhikkhus.
One should not dwell under the same roof; not [sit on a seat] when [a regular bhikkhu] is seated on the ground,
[not on a high] seat when [he is] on a low one, [nor] on a walking-path when [he walks] on the ground, nor on a walking-path [when he walks on a low one];
with a more senior [probationer] no [formal] act [is valid]; the interruptions of nights, and the clearing [of probation];
the laying aside and the undertaking [of the observance] are to be known; the probationers,
those deserving [to be sent back] to the beginning, those deserving penance (mānatta), likewise those observing penance,
and also those deserving rehabilitation (abbhāna) — again by way of their combination.
For probationers there are three; for one observing penance, four —
the interruptions of nights do not coincide; and in [observing] penance there is the daily [duty].
Two formal acts are similar; the remaining three acts are the same.
