[158] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus used various kinds of ear-wax removers (kaṇṇamalaharaṇī) — made of gold, made of silver. People complained, criticized, and spread it about, … "just like householders who enjoy sensual pleasures" … They reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "Bhikkhus, various kinds of ear-wax removers are not to be used; whoever should use one commits an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). I allow, bhikkhus, ear-wax removers made of bone, made of ivory, made of horn, made of reed, made of bamboo, made of wood, made of lac, made of fruit, made of metal, and made of conch-shell."
