[57] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus (chabbaggiyā bhikkhū) used various kinds of knife-handles, made of gold and made of silver. People looked down upon them, criticized them, and spread it about, saying: "… like householders who enjoy sensual pleasures" … They informed the Blessed One of this matter … "Bhikkhus, various kinds of knife-handles are not to be used; whoever should use one commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). I allow, bhikkhus, one made of bone, made of ivory, made of horn, made of reed, made of bamboo, made of wood, made of lac, made of fruit, made of metal, and made of conch-shell (saṅkhanābhi)."
