[165] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus (chabbaggiyā bhikkhū) wore various kinds of fasteners (vidha) — made of gold and made of silver. People looked down upon, criticized, and spread it about … "just like householders who enjoy sensual pleasures" … They reported this matter to the Blessed One … "Bhikkhus, various kinds of fasteners are not to be worn; whoever should wear one commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). Bhikkhus, I allow fasteners made of bone, made of ivory, made of horn, made of reed, made of bamboo, … made of conch-shell, made of thread."
