[287] Now at that time several bhikkhus of equal seat-rank (samānāsanikā), having sat together on a single bed, broke the bed; having sat together on a single bench, they broke the bench. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. (He said:) "Bhikkhus, I allow a bed for a group of three, a bench for a group of three." Even a group of three, having sat on a bed, broke the bed; having sat on a bench, broke the bench. Those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. (He said:) "Bhikkhus, I allow a bed for a group of two, a bench for a group of two."
