[588] Now at that time the entire bhikkhunī Saṅgha, while making the invitation (pavāraṇā), created an uproar. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow the appointment (sammuti) of one competent and capable bhikkhunī to invite the bhikkhu Saṅgha on behalf of the bhikkhunī Saṅgha. And thus, bhikkhus, should she be appointed: first the bhikkhunī should be asked; having asked her, the Saṅgha should be informed by a competent and capable bhikkhunī:
'Ladies, let the Saṅgha hear me. If it is the right time for the Saṅgha, the Saṅgha should appoint the bhikkhunī named so-and-so to invite the bhikkhu Saṅgha on behalf of the bhikkhunī Saṅgha. This is the motion (ñatti).
'Ladies, let the Saṅgha hear me. The Saṅgha appoints the bhikkhunī named so-and-so to invite the bhikkhu Saṅgha on behalf of the bhikkhunī Saṅgha. Any lady to whom the appointment of the bhikkhunī named so-and-so to invite the bhikkhu Saṅgha on behalf of the bhikkhunī Saṅgha is agreeable should be silent; any to whom it is not agreeable should speak.
'The bhikkhunī named so-and-so has been appointed by the Saṅgha to invite the bhikkhu Saṅgha on behalf of the bhikkhunī Saṅgha. It is agreeable to the Saṅgha; therefore it is silent. Thus do I hold it.'"
