[1359] It is for two reasons (atthavasa) that a training rule (sikkhāpada) has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples: for the excellence of the Saṅgha and for the comfort of the Saṅgha. It is for these two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples. It is for two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples: for the restraint of shameless persons and for the comfortable dwelling of well-behaved bhikkhus. It is for these two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples. It is for two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples: for the restraint of taints (āsava) pertaining to the present life and for the warding off of taints pertaining to future lives. It is for these two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples. It is for two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples: for the restraint of enmities pertaining to the present life and for the warding off of enmities pertaining to future lives. It is for these two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples. It is for two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples: for the restraint of faults pertaining to the present life and for the warding off of faults pertaining to future lives. It is for these two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples. It is for two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples: for the restraint of perils pertaining to the present life and for the warding off of perils pertaining to future lives. It is for these two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples. It is for two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples: for the restraint of unwholesome states pertaining to the present life and for the warding off of unwholesome states pertaining to future lives. It is for these two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples. It is for two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples: out of compassion for householders and for cutting off the faction of those of evil wishes. It is for these two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples. It is for two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples: for arousing confidence in those without confidence and for the increase of confidence in those already confident. It is for these two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples. It is for two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples: for the continuance of the true Dhamma (saddhamma) and for the support of the discipline (vinaya). It is for these two reasons that a training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples. The Second Chapter, on Reasons, is finished.
